Copenhagen The capital city of Copenhagen is the largest urban center in Scandinavia with a population of 1 and 1/2 million people. The city was founded in 1167 and many of its original old buildings are intact, creating a distinctive atmosphere. One of the best overviews of Copenhagen is from the top of the Round Tower, built by King Christian the Fourth as a result of his interest in astronomy. The port area is called Nyhavn, a mecca of fascinating architecture, restaurants, and shops. Canal tours can be boarded here which provide an excellent tour of the city as seen from the water. One of the sights along every tour is The Little Mermaid, a statue which was the inspiration of Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale of the same name. An exciting aspect of Copenhagen is the royal flavor, with grand castles and daily pageantry in the form of colorful marching bands playing in the streets and in Tivoli Gardens.
